I am addicted to shopping. I shop online, I shop on my break from work and on my days off. It’s time for me to make a change. For those of you who have never heard of capsule wardrobe, I will explain. Blogger Caroline Reckter from the minimalist fashion blog Un-fancy created this experiment. Basically its a wardrobe of 37 (use a number that works for you!) items that you switch out every three months including shoes but not including handbags, accessories or lounge wear. So it’s basically no shopping for three months. I know, it’s going to be SO hard. The three months go by season. Once the three months is up you purchase things that you realize you really need and take out the pieces that you realize you didn’t wear at all or that are not appropriate for the next season. You can give them to a friend, donate them OR if you know you’ll wear them again you put it in a drawer or basket which acts as a time capsule. Once the season is up you can go through your capsule and pick things that ARE appropriate with the next season.By doing this your wardrobe is filled up with versatile pieces you know you like to wear.

I want to do this for a number of reasons. There have been countless times where I’ve gone shopping for the wrong reasons. Sometimes it’s because I just feel like buying something and other times it’s due to boredom. I want to have more time and money for other things. Through this capsule wardrobe one of my goals is to finish furnishing my apartment. It’s the beginning of October so my capsule wardrobe will stay the same until the end of November…(hopefully).
I would like to apologize for the quality of some of these pictures. It took me hours to take all of them and the last thing I want to do is take more! I promise I will find a better strategy for next time! This is what my wardrobe looks like at the moment after narrowing it down!
What I learned so far…
I noticed that I need to go shoe shopping, the only shopping I dread. Caroline states “shoes can really change an outfit”. I have 3 including rain boots. LOL. The short black boots are actually my work boots. I wear them at work and out and about. I need to make a division. I’ve also learned that I have a lot of formal wear, and realistically I never go out to fancy places haha. I have three pair of jeans (love all of them) but I have no other kind of pants like trousers. I also notice that I have a lot of white, black, navy and purple. I should try and mix the colors up a bit!
I have a total of 31 items. I’m planning on doing an update because like I said I need a pair of boots and trousers. I didn’t include my jackets because the photos REALLY didn’t turn out so i’ll include my jackets in the update as well. I’m so happy I did this. Now that everything is hanging up in my closet I’m making clothing combinations that I’ve never done before. I’ve also been wearing clothes that never got much wear before this experiment.
I’ve written where everything is from. Just scroll over each image! I plan on doing a blog post like this for every season. So stick around 🙂
